IT’s been business as (un) usual here at Embellish Atelier. Saddened by the rapid cancellation of events here in Sydney for weddings, racing carnivals, and the need to close our beautiful shop front to customers quickly became apparent. We have however been doing lots of research about the dilemma around masks. We have decided to create a small bespoke range and will make them up to order for our clients. The  mask range is now available on the website for you to purchase. We make them with 3 layers of cotton fabric, with a flexible nose piece, and pocket to insert an extra filter. They are washable. Please stay safe.

Rozelle based business Embellish Atelier  is currently displaying an exhibition of spectacular hats, headpieces and artisanal creations that are the outcome of their inaugural ‘Hattember’ Competition. The Hattember Competition, which ran across two categories, challenged entrants to create something magical for the month of September, with the proceeds from sales of any of the works going towards the John Skipper Kelly Fund for disadvantaged youth.

In the Headpiece category, each entrant was provided with the same set bag of materials, the only difference being the colours supplied. This bag of traditional millinery supplies was required to be used, if only in part, along with a maximum of three other materials. In the Artisan category, entrants were challenged to create anything other than a hat or headpiece using a bag of more unconventional materials such as Salmon-skin leather and mouldable plastic.

The wide scope of possibility offered from each of the provided materials resulted in an incredibly diverse and beautiful array of hats, headpieces, bags, jewellery and display art.

Hatters Millinery Supplies celebrated the achievements of each of the entrants on September 1stby hosting an opening night exhibition at the shop’s premises on Victoria Rd in Rozelle. The winners were announced to a packed room of milliners, family and friends as well as across social media through a live feed. If you missed the opening, each of the almost 40 entries will remain displayed in sotre and daily update on Hattember Instagram page throughout the month of September, with a public “people’s choice prize” running for you to have your say!

The millinery award is an invitation only competition held a t Oaks Day at Flemington each year sponsored by Myer. As such it offers the opportunity to develop, and push your skills, designs, and ideas to a different level. This year was no different with over 60 milliners utilising a range of techniques, and technologies.

I managed to snatch some hours in the evenings  to finalise the headpiece I had designed some time ago. I  found a gorgeous pink quipure lace fabric to embellish® with couture beading and proceeded to wrap with lace using a wire technique I learned and  developed under the master Vladimir Statacuic.  The gorgeous Isabel Phillips from Belle model Management modelled the design on the day. Ruth Tate Sydney created a beautiful frock from the fabric to co-ordinate and Mink Hair and Beauty did an amazing job creating a hairstyle and makeup to compete the look. Its really a privilege to develop your ideas and skills and techniques and try to push the boundaries of your style and skill.

We hope you have found that wonderful outfit and created or purchased a stylish matching headpiece.  Here at Embellish we have been very busy making many beautiful bespoke pieces.  If you are still searching for that special headpiece we have a good range of hats, fascinators and  headpieces  here in our Embellish atelier.

Last October, Catherine visited Studio 10 to be part of a millinery segment broadcast on national television and that is viewable online.
